Embarking on the journey from the west, the route commences with an extended drive from Arusha to Lemosho Gate. The initial two days involve a trek through the rainforest, leading to Shira Ridge and traversing the expansive Shira Plateau. Progressing northward, the route follows a clockwise trajectory from Moir Hut to Pofu Camp to School Hut/Kibo hut, ultimately summiting from the east. The descent takes the Mweka route.

9 Days+ 2 Nights Northern Circuit Itinerary

DAY 1 – Arrival

Arrive at your lodging in Arusha, Tanzania, at your convenience. Airport pick-up and private transfers to your lodge. We’ll gather for a pre-climb briefing, ensuring you have all the necessary essentials. Our Kilimanjaro trek begins and ends in Arusha, spanning 9 days.

DAY 2 – Arusha to Lemosho Gate – Forest Camp

Overview

  •  Hours of driving – 3 hours of driving to lemosho gate.
  • Elevation of the starting point (gate)- 2100m.
  • Name of the camp- forest camp or mti mkubwa.
  • Elevation of the next destination – 2800m.
  • Total elevation gain of the day-700m.
  •  Ecological zone/habitat – rain forest.
  • Hiking time -3 to 4 hours.
  •  Distance -5km.
  • Water-minimum 2 liters maximum 3liters.
  • Lunch – saved at the gate.
  •  Attractions of the day- big trees like east africa yellow wood, flowers like fireball lily, primates like black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, animals like tree hyrax and genet cat, birds like turaco, white eyes, robin chart.

Description

After an early breakfast, embark on a drive to Lemosho gate, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate in the western part of the park. Here, you’ll undergo a checkup and officially begin your Kilimanjaro ascent via the Lemosho Route. Meet the Summit savanna team who will accompany you on this journey.

DAY 3 – Forest Camp to Shira One

Overview

  • Hiking from mti mkubwa to shira one.
  • The elevation of starting point (mti mkubwa) 2800m.
  • The elevation of the next camp (shira one) 3610m.
  • Hiking time- 5 to 7 hours.
  • Distance – 7km.
  • Lunch -saved at the camp.
  • Evening hiking or acclimatization – absent or present – the expedition leader is always there to decide based on how someone feeling.
  • Water- minimum 3 liters and maximum 5 liters. For full whole day.
  • Habitat/ecology zone – heather zone/ moorland.
  • Attractions – sick view on the way to the camp and from the camp, the ridge of shira peak, shira plateau, erica trees, white nape raven, protea kilimanjaro.kibo peak and the second highest peak of tanzania of tanzania – mount meru.

Description

Trek through rainforests and moorlands, facing the challenge of ascending through moorlands. The day concludes at Shira Camp 1 (Altitude: 3610 m), offering a rewarding overnight stay.

DAY 4 – Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut Camp

Overview

  • Hiking from shira one to moir camp.
  • The elevation of the starting point is 3610m.
  • The elevation of the next camp 4200m.
  • Elevation gain is 590m.
  • Hiking time – 5 to 7 hours.
  • Distance – 10km.
  • Ecological zone –moorland and alpine desert.
  • How to back in your backpack – rain gear, one or two of energy bars. Two liters of water, sun hat, neck gaiters, your passport, your wallet, your small first aid kit

Description

After breakfast and ample relaxation, embark on a steady climb to reach Moir Hut Camp at 4200 m. Despite the strenuous effort, the evening promises breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the remarkable scenery.

DAY 5 – Pofu Camp

Overview

  • Hiking from moir camp to pofu camp.
  • The elevation of the starting point is 4200m.
  • The elevation of the next camp is 4000m.
  • The elevation gain of the day is 260m, lunch point is 3900m
  • Hiking time – 6 to 9hours.
  • Distance – 11.5km.
  • Ecological zones  –  alpine desert and moor land.

It is a longest day just before the summit day, and the day starts by climbing the moir ridge for about 1 hour. On top of Moir ridge there is exceptional view of volcano hills below the mountain. From the ridge you keep on hiking for about 2 hours before starting crossing several valleys to the lunch point – Buffalo Lunch spot – 3900m. After Lunch you do the last hours to the camp.

DAY 6 – Third Cave Camp

Overview

  • Hiking from pofu to third cave camp.
  • The elevation of the starting 4000m.
  • The elevation of the next camp is 3800m.
  • The elevation gain of the day –2oom.
  • Hiking time is 3 to 4 hours.
  • Distance is 5km.
  • Ecological zone is moorland
  • Acclimatization hike – present.
  • What to pack in your backpack- water, wallet, passport, snacks, small first aid kit, hardshell jacket and hardshell pants and sunglasses
  • Actractions of the day are – northern ice field, glacial valleys, mount meru view, ocean of clouds, giant senecio and lebelia plants.

Description

On this day you’ll be crossing a lot of glacial valleys on the way to third cave camp. Once you get at camp, you will seat for lunch, resting for couple hours before doing an acclimatization hike. Dinner and Overnight.

Day 7 – Kibo/School Hunt Camp

Overview

  • Hiking from third camp to kibo/school hunt camp.
  • The elevation of the starting point is 3800m.
  • The elevation of the next camp is 4700m.
  • Elevation gain of the day is 900m.
  • Hiking time 5 to 7hours,
  • Distance -10km.
  • Ecological zone/ habitat – alpine desert.

Description

A soon you get to Kibo, you’ll have Lunch and the lead guide will do the summit briefing as well as checking your summit gear, they also decide the best time to leave for the summit climb. Therefore you’ll rest the rest of the day. Dinner and Sleep for couple hours and heading to the summit.

Day 8 – Kibo Hut

Overview

  • Please please note that is gonna be the long day, think about 14 to 16 hours.
  • Hiking from kibo hut/school hut camp to uhuru peak (the summit of mount kilimanjaro).
  • Elevation of the starting point – 4720m.
  • The elevation of uhuru peak (the summit of kilimanjaro) – 5895m.
  • The elevation gain to uhuru peak – 1175m.
  • Hiking time to the summit- 6 to 8 hours.
  • Hiking time to milenium camp or mweka camp via barafu camp – 6 to 8 hours.
  • Distance from uhuru peak to barafu camp – 5km.
  • Distance from barafu camp to millennium camp – 3.5km.
  • Distance barafu camp to mweka camp – 7km.
  • Ecological zone- arctic zone to the top, below 5000m – alpine desert zone and moor land.

Start the final climb by headlight around 12 a.m. Reach Gilman’s Point (18,652 ft) at the crater rim, from Gilman’s Point you keep on hiking along the rim of the crater for about 2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft). Descend through Barafu Camp to reach Millennium Camp/Mweka Camp [14-16 hours walking].

DAY 9 – Descent to Mweka Gate  and Return to Arusha

Overview

  • Hiking down from mweka camp to mweka gate, then get certificate then drive back to the hotel.
  • Hiking time-3 to 4 hours.
  • Distance -10km.
