The Machame route, commonly referred to as the “Whiskey” route, stands out as the most favored path up Kilimanjaro.

Machame’s allure lies in its breathtaking scenery; however, the trail is recognized for its challenging and steep nature, especially due to its condensed itinerary. Consequently, this route is better suited for individuals seeking adventure or those possessing some experience in high-altitude settings, hiking, or backpacking.

This route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, commencing with a brief drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. The journey guides hikers through the enchanting rainforest to Shira Plateau, a convergence point for several Kilimanjaro routes. Subsequently, the route veers east, navigating beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on the Southern Circuit before reaching the summit at Barafu. The descent follows the Mweka route.

Summit Savannah provides the Machame route as either a 7-day group climb or a 6-day private climb. The 6-day option condenses days 4 and 5, bypassing an overnight stay at Karanga Camp and progressing directly from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp.
